Tools every regulated book must give you

Deposit limits cap how much you can add over a set period. Loss limits cap how much you can lose. Time limits cap how long a session runs. Cool-off periods lock the account for a short window. Self-exclusion locks it for months or years and cannot be reversed on a whim, which is the point.

Set these the day you open the account. A limit chosen when you are calm is a different decision from a limit chosen at 1am after a bad run.

Centralized self-exclusion

Ontario launched BetGuard, a centralized self-exclusion tool covering every regulated igaming site in the province including OLG’s, open to anyone 19 or older. Alberta requires every approved operator in its new market to connect to the province’s centralized self-exclusion program. In other provinces, self-exclusion runs through the provincial lottery corporation.

Signs worth taking seriously

• Betting more than you planned, more often than you planned
• Chasing losses with larger stakes
• Borrowing money to bet, or betting money set aside for something else
• Hiding how much you bet from people close to you
• Betting to change how you feel rather than for entertainment
• Feeling restless or irritable when you try to cut back

The maths, plainly

Sportsbooks build a margin into every price. On a standard two-way market it is around 4.8 percent, and it is far higher on parlays. Over enough bets, that margin wins. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
